Celtic Lakes Resort ... Wales' home of coarse, catfish & carp fishing

Celtic Lakes Resort will once again host the final of the 2008 Wales Carp Masters as well as being the sole qualifying venue. The final, to be held on 29th - 31st August 2008 will take place on Elysium, the specimen carp lake at Celtic Lakes.

Nestled in the tranquil countryside of West Wales, only 4 miles from Lampeter, Celtic Lakes Resort offers a massive 75 acres of outstanding virgin water fishing, superb fishing holidays and the warmest of welcomes.

Choose from 6 well stocked lakes, each landscaped to perfection with stunning native and tropical plants and waterfalls. Each lake is brimming with coarse fish including bream, perch, roach, rudd and tench, as well as carp to 40lb and catfish to 64lb. Celtic lakes resort is one of the few fishing holiday destinations in wales to stock catfish so if you can handle a huge cat, Celtic Lakes Resort is where you'll find it.

With the introduction of 40lb+ specimen carp and 60lb+ catfish in October 2007, Celtic lakes Resort is set to become one of the premier "big fish" waters and fishing holiday destinations in the whole of the UK.

Not just for anglers !

The surrounding region also boasts some of Wales' finest river, canal, sea and estuary fishing. When you're done fishing, explore nearby Lampeter in the Teifi valley, an historic market town and home to a thriving university. Alternatively, why not visit the charming coastal town of Aberaeron (only 10 minutes away) or spend an evening in Aberystwyth, a bustling town packed with excellent restaurants and bars. In short, it's every coarse fisherman's idea of heaven.

In addition to some of the best coarse, catfish and carp fishing holidays in the UK, Celtic Lakes Resort is currently undergoing ambitious building plans. These include converting the existing farmhouse into holiday accommodation, development of a 20 room hotel, the building of a large clubhouse with restaurant, bars and an anglers bar and development of 16 luxury 5-star log cabins.

The Celtic Lakes Resort Philosophy:

John Carney, owner of the venue, sums up what Celtic Lakes is all about:

"As far as the fishing goes at Celtic Lakes, I am trying to link with serious anglers who want serious sport with accommodation which will appeal to those who want to enjoy comfort in delightful surroundings and will feel happy to bring their wives and families or organise a holiday with friends which combines specimen hunting or pleasure angling with sophisticated accommodation and facilities"

The full list of qualifiers and winning weights were:

5
3rd-5th August

Qualifying kicks off in April 2007

Despite Celtic Lakes being a relatively new venue on the Welsh carp scene, there were some quite extraordinary winning heat weights. This began as early as the second heat on May 2007 when not only was a staggering 1418lbs of carp banked by the competitors, but a new Welsh record was set by the winning pair of Craig Jones and Karl Jones who landed a mightily impressive 354lbs 9oz of carp.

The winning duo has this to say:

"We would like to take this opportunity first off by thanking John and the lads at Celtic Lakes for a great barbeque and an awesome weekend of fishing. It was clear how much hard work and dedication they had all put into the lakes as it was the best session we have ever had, netting 354lbs 9ozs over the course of the weekend."
It just kept getting better and better at Celtic Lakes !!

The match held over the weekend of 18th - 20th May produced some incredible weights. Complex owner, John Carney, said:

“What a weekend! We are all totally knackered, was that some serious fishing or what!”
In first place were Philip Mathews and Terry Hughes with an incredible 511lb 14oz, but story of the weekend was that they had to stage a late fight back, from over 80lb behind, to upstage Simon O’Brian and Mike Netherway who were in front for much of the match. Simon and Mike concluded with a total of 473lb as their catch rate fell away dramatically overnight on the run in.

Record Smashed again in Heat 4

With the weather being far less than ideal in heat 4 - with torrential rain and cold northerly winds - the competitors could have easily been forgiven for thinking that catch-rates might suffer. Not on bit of it.

The winning pair, Simon O'Brian and Tim Rees banked a hugely impressive 609lb 15oz and yet again the 40-hour Wales carp match fishing record was broken.

Finishing in third place, with an impressive enough catch of 270lb 12oz, were Jason Callaghan and Steve Blow, and in second place were Gary Wadey and Leigh Wells with 373lb 10oz.

Final qualifiers book their place in the final

The final qualifier staged at Celtic Lakes Resort for the Wales Carp Masters took place over the weekend of 3rd - 5th August 2007. The winning pair of Richard Onions and Peter Rees took the honours with an impressive 468lb.

So what does 2008 have in store?

Elysium, the specimen carp lake being used for qualifying at Celtic Lakes, has matured further since last years event and with further stockings of double figure fish combined with the growth of the existing stock, we are once again expecting some exciting qualifying events this year.

Will last years record breaking weights be broken? Who knows but we fully expect some exceptional weights in qualifying again this year. Its going to be great !!

Make sure you don't miss out !!
